Today we added a new feature to JoeRockhead.com: Browse By Label. We’re proud of the diverse selection of great indie labels that we showcase at JoeRockhead.com — and now you have a handy set of short-cuts to help you find something cool to listen to. Gotta like that, right?

The Indie Scene — According to CNN

Saturday, October 14th, 2006

Don’t know your Cat Power from your Cat Stevens? Not exactly sure how to pronounce Sufjan? Fear not, oh clueless one — the most trusted name in news has helpfully posted this handy field guide to all things indie.

Music ranks very highly in importance for most people in the indie scene. If you tell someone you like Radiohead, be sure to mention that you think “The Bends” constitutes their best work. After all, no one knew who they were back then. Some other bands you should know are The Smiths, Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill, My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr., Spoon, Belle and Sebastian and TV On The Radio — for starters.

And don’t forget to take the “How Indie Are You?” quiz!

My Weekend Is Shaping up Nicely…

Friday, October 13th, 2006

I’ll be leaving the bar a little early tonight: Turner Classic Movies is using the dubious/pretentious date of Friday the 13th to kick off their new horror/cool/kitsch late night motion picture movie show, TCM Underground. Rob Zombie, a fan, lover, and maker of B, C, D, and F movies, gets to sit in the foldie canvas Hollywood-director-style host’s chair. Expect no Elvira-style wackiness. The weekly show kicks off tonight at 2am (okay, so technically Saturday the 14th) with an Edward D. Wood Jr double feature: Plan 9 From Outer Space and Bride of the Monster. Get the Cheese to sick bay!

If’n you’ve got Sirius Satellite Radio, or perhaps are still looking for an excuse to pick one up, here ya go: Live from CBGB’s on Sunday, October 15th (which as you already know is their last night before closing up and moving to Vegas), Patti Smith performs at the farewell show. Tune into the mostly excellent Sirius Disorder channel around 9pm for the (yep, I’m gonna say it) event. Should be a star studded, pierced, and tattoed affair…

Cat Power: Indie Rock Supermodel?

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

According to FishBowlNY, former Atlantan Cat Power has been tapped to be the new face of Chanel jewelry. I’m pretty sure that makes her the first former Fellini’s cashier ever to have a viable career as a Rock Star/Supermodel. Congrats Chan!

Last Call For CBGB

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

This weekend is your last chance to puke on the floor at CBGB. After Sunday night’s show, they’re packing up the urinals and headin’ to Vegas, baby. Not suprisingly, the last weekend features a star-studded line-up, including performances by The Dictators, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, The Waldos, Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty & Tony Shanahan. Looks to be a great time! Advance tix are sold out, but a few are being held for each show to be sold at the door. Click here for more info.

Ira Kaplan’s favorite music and stuff

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

Those Pitchfork kids got Yo La Tengo’s Ira Kaplan to enlighten the world about whatever it is he happens to be into at the moment. Ira’s favorite new band? None other than Atlanta’s very own The Black Lips! Hooray! Ira’s favorite record store? That’s right, baby… umm…. not us. He did, however, select Other Music, which we have to admit is a mighty fine store, and we don’t mind losing out to them on Ira’s rock-o-meter. I’m sure JoeRockhead.com was a close second, right Ira?

For further enlightenment, check out the full article here.

And if you need to round out your Yo La Tengo collection, we’ve got the hook-up.
