Things To Do: The Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Got no plans this weekend? Well then why not pile in the ol’ microbus and head out to the California desert for the Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival? Billed as “a rootsicana newgrassy folkadelic experience,” the festival happens October 21st and 22nd, and is a benefit for local fire disaster relief and wildlife conservancy organizations. The line-up includes Railroad Earth, Dave Alvin, The Ditty Bops, Tim Easton, Ken Will Morton, the Thrift Store All Stars, and many others.

My Weekend Is Shaping up Nicely…

Friday, October 13th, 2006

I’ll be leaving the bar a little early tonight: Turner Classic Movies is using the dubious/pretentious date of Friday the 13th to kick off their new horror/cool/kitsch late night motion picture movie show, TCM Underground. Rob Zombie, a fan, lover, and maker of B, C, D, and F movies, gets to sit in the foldie canvas Hollywood-director-style host’s chair. Expect no Elvira-style wackiness. The weekly show kicks off tonight at 2am (okay, so technically Saturday the 14th) with an Edward D. Wood Jr double feature: Plan 9 From Outer Space and Bride of the Monster. Get the Cheese to sick bay!

If’n you’ve got Sirius Satellite Radio, or perhaps are still looking for an excuse to pick one up, here ya go: Live from CBGB’s on Sunday, October 15th (which as you already know is their last night before closing up and moving to Vegas), Patti Smith performs at the farewell show. Tune into the mostly excellent Sirius Disorder channel around 9pm for the (yep, I’m gonna say it) event. Should be a star studded, pierced, and tattoed affair…

Last Call For CBGB

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

This weekend is your last chance to puke on the floor at CBGB. After Sunday night’s show, they’re packing up the urinals and headin’ to Vegas, baby. Not suprisingly, the last weekend features a star-studded line-up, including performances by The Dictators, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, The Waldos, Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty & Tony Shanahan. Looks to be a great time! Advance tix are sold out, but a few are being held for each show to be sold at the door. Click here for more info.

Original R.E.M. line-up to play at Hall of Fame induction

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

Coinciding nicely with the Sept. 12th release of And I Feel Fine, the original four R.E.M.’ers are scheduled to kick it old-school on September 16th as they get inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Wanna go? Both VH1 and Newbury Comics are running contests for tickets, airfare and such.

I suspect the festivities will go something like this:

Just Like Being There, ‘Cept Without The Stench!

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

The fine folks at AT&T, who are gonna end up being your phone company no matter what, are streaming into your home the entirety of Lollapalooza, that is, if you care about that sorta thing. It’s all part of their Blue Room dealy-bob. The Fest is this weekend, August 4th through the 6th. The line-up this year is 130 acts long, performing on 8 stages and includes such acts as Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, The Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, Sleater-Kinney, and many, many more (125 more, dummass). Gosh, I just noticed those acts I just listed (and many, many more) are all available in our shop!

Also, AT&T’s Blue Room will be streaming the Austin City Limits Music Festival when that goes down in September. I might remind you.

To Do: Athens Popfest 2006

Monday, July 31st, 2006

The Athens Popfest 2006 looks to be a bang-up time, with about a gazillion bands playing at two venues over the span of 5 days. And hey — the first day is free! Among the many highlights: Vietnam, Summer Hymns, Oh OK, The Maybellines, 8-Track Gorilla, and Apples In Stereo. All this for 40 bucks? What’s not to like?! The Athens Popfest runs August 8th thru 12th. In Athens, naturally.
