Evel Knievel and Kanye West Hug It Out

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

It’s a Christmas miracle! Looks like Evel and Kanye have settled their differences…

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Evel Knievel and Kanye West have worked it out.

The 69-year-old iconic motorcycle daredevil said he and West met at his Clearwater condo recently. They settled a federal lawsuit over the use of Knievel’s trademarked image in a popular West music video.

Knievel sued West and his record company last year. He took issue with a 2006 music video for the song “Touch the Sky,” in which the rapper takes on the persona of “Evel Kanyevel” and tries to jump a rocket-powered motorcycle over a canyon.

Generally speaking, I think Kanye West is a douchebag. But “Evel Kanyevel”? Gotta admit — that’s a good one.

R.E.M. debuting song on ‘AC 360°’

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

You can (sorta) hear a cut from R.E.M.’s next album in this trailer for Anderson Cooper’s forthcoming documentary ‘Planet in Peril.’ The show looks like it might be good, but the song doesn’t exactly rock. At all. Still keeping my fingers crossed that the new disc doesn’t turn out to be another mid-tempo snoozer, but this isn’t a good sign.

CBGB Founder, Hilly Kristal Dies at Age 75

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

NEW YORK, Aug. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform you of the death of Hilly Kristal, who died on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 from complications from Lung Cancer. Kristal, 75, founded the legendary rock club CBGB and ran the club for 33 years. A singer and songwriter himself, Kristal opened the club to showcase “Country Bluegrass and Blues”; instead the club became a breeding ground for Punk rock. Among the many acts that called CBGB home were Blondie, the Talking Heads, Television, Living Color, Patti Smith and the Ramones. The club closed in October 2006, but CBGB continues, with a retail store in New York City and worldwide merchandise sales; in addition, there currently are plans to open new CBGB clubs in several locations.

Kristal is survived by his daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, son, Mark Dana Kristal, son-in-law Ger Burgman, grandchildren Jenny and Adam Burgman, CBGB, and the thousands of artists and musicians who played the club. A private memorial service is planned. A public memorial will be held at a later date. Contributions in Hilly’s honor may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society or to the Hilly Kristal Foundation for Musicians and Artists (168 Second Avenue, PMB 207, New York, NY 10003).
